For long the LGBTQIA+ community have been hesitant about coming to India fearing a severe lack of acceptance. For long people from the community have missed out on the gorgeous places that India has to offer and the colourful life of India. But, on a historic day, the infamous Article 377 was struck down and a new India opened up for the LGBTQIA+ community.

India is slowly becoming one of the safest places for people from the LGBTQIA+ community. But, in a country like India, it becomes hard to choose one single destination. So for this Pride Month, we listed out some of the most gorgeous destinations in India that are also LGBTQIA+ friendly.


Kolkata has always been the pioneer of change. People often say that it was in Kolkata that the renaissance of India took birth in. With distinctly progressive and open culture, it is beautiful to see the amazing acceptance that Kolkata doles out to its LGBTQIA+ community. Remarkable personalities like Rituparno Ghosh- those who have paved the way for the LGBTQIA+ community, belong to this city of joy.

Loaded with culture, art, and intellectualism, Kolkata is different from the rest of the cities in India. With its forward-thinking, it was in Kolkata that Pride Marches first took birth. It started with merely 15 people, yet it showed India, that Kolkata is not afraid to come out and be proud and so should no one be.

Except for the beautiful rich history and the even greater culture, Kolkata is a safe place to visit if you are from the LGBTQIA+ community.


Though Delhi isn’t always touted to be one of the safest cities in India, when it comes to LGBTQIA+ safety or rights- this city is right up there.

Delhi has actually been one of the loudest voices against the archaic and regressive Article 377. It was the Delhi High Court that first struck down the law and liberated the LGBTQIA+ community. The community here is very strong and present and they are not afraid to back down. They celebrate their identities through several marches and events that keep taking place in Delhi.

The parade also crosses over the iconic heritage monuments of Delhi and is an absolute treat to be a part of.

Connaught Place In Delhi has several Bars and Nightclubs that are dedicated to the LGBTQIA+ community, and the staff is well trained to make sure they are safe.

Many hotels in Delhi have also popped up which are completely safe for anyone from the community, allowing them the safety net to travel across this beautiful ancient city. From Delhi, you can also head out to Agra, and spend a wondrous time with your partner in front of the romantic Taj Mahal. Agra is also extremely LGBTQIA+ friendly.


Chennai is a beautiful city filled with an insane amount of diversity. From cultural monuments to a buzzing nightlife, Chennai has it all.

The beauty of Chennai is it has managed to blend their traditional cultural roots to the ideas of today.

Chennai is also the place where you will find acceptance in every corner. It is also the proud founder fo the Chennai International Queer Film Festival- which is wholly dedicated to filmmakers from the LGBTQIA+ community. This allows a safe and creative space for people who are unable to come out in the mainstream due to their sexual orientation. From the panellists to the films, everything is run and dedicated to the community.

The state of Tamil Nadu is also the first state that recognised the need to support Transgenders. They came up with Transgender policies and were the first to implement Transgenders right.

Chennai is also always abuzz with several Pride Marches, and workshops that are devoted to the community.


Mumbai has always been one of the major cities to lead the waves of change. Home to the great Bollywood culture, this city believes in the idea of Live and Let Live. Mumbai is not progressive and inclusive. This city is an absolute joy to visit especially if you are from the LGBTQIA+ community. Armed with several Pride Marches, Queer Film Festivals and Pride Nights- this city truly celebrates the idea of being who you are.

The colourful cafes of Mumbai are one of the most LGBTQIA+ safe places that you will visit. You will also find yourself witnessing some amazing nightlife which is both safe and exciting. Some clubs have special festivals and nights dedicated to the community.

Here you will be able to roam freely under the blinding lights of the gorgeous Marine Drive. If you come here during the annual Pride March, you will witness the absolute excitement and joy Mumbai offers and the colours that Mumbai is painted in.

While Jaipur hasn’t really made big splashes in the LGBTQIA+ scene in India, it sure is making progress. Jaipur saw its first Pride March in recent times, and since then the LGBTQIA+ community has seen a great upsurge. People are coming out and showing their colourful identities.
